Quirky Japanese: 2000 Mitsuoka Viewt

Japanese vehicle manufacturers often march to the beat of a different drummer. Take Mitsuoka as a prime example. It produces retro-style vehicles that resemble some of the most significant models in automotive history. Its most successful model is the Viewt, with approximately 13,000 vehicles sold. That figure will likely grow, as the Viewt is still in production in an updated form. This 2000 example is a survivor that presents quite well. It won’t appeal to everyone, but the listing statistics suggest it has generated interest. It could be the quirky appearance or the fact that it is undeniably affordable. I have to give a big shout-out to Barn Finder Roger for spotting the Viewt listed here on eBay in Miami, Florida, for $5,499 OBO.

Founded in 1968, Mitsuoka built its reputation by creating micro versions of iconic vehicles. These included the unfortunately named BUBU 356 Speedstar, modeled on the Porsche 356 Speedster, and the Rock Star, heavily influenced by Chevrolet’s C2 Corvette. However, it launched the Viewt in 1993, which has become its most successful model. Over four generations, an impressive 13,000 of these have left the company’s Toyama City facility. If you squint at the listing images, you will notice hints of the 1963 Jaguar Mk II. This 2000 example is a First Generation vehicle and is described as a survivor. Finished in Pale Yellow with faux woodgrain, I initially thought the hood paint had issues, but I believe reflections created the illusion. The panels are straight, and the seller doesn’t mention potential rust problems. Otherwise, the trim is in acceptable condition for a survivor, and the tinted glass is excellent.

Mitsuoka developed the Viewt on the Nissan March platform, adding coachbuilt panels and interior trim upgrades justifying the asking price. Buyers receive lashings of leather, acres of faux walnut, and luxury touches like air conditioning, power windows, power locks, power mirrors, a rear defogger, and retro-style gauges. This interior remains in good condition, with no obvious issues with the leather or upholstered surfaces. Some of the walnut shows age-related deterioration, but it remains very presentable. A recent addition is a Double-DIN touchscreen stereo, bringing a modern touch to this old-world interior. As a private import from its home country, this quirky classic is right-hand drive, which some potential buyers might find off-putting. However, adapting to steering from the “wrong” side is surprisingly easy and quickly becomes second nature.

One attraction of the Viewt is that, because it is based on a small Japanese production car, sourcing mechanical components and spares for servicing and maintenance is extremely easy. It features Nissan’s 1.0-liter, 16-valve, fuel-injected, DOHC four-cylinder engine, sending power to the front wheels via a four-speed CVT automatic transmission. The motor is no ball of fire, producing 54hp and 58 ft/lbs of torque. However, the saving grace is that with a curb weight of approximately 1,920 lbs, that motor doesn’t have much mass to move. It probably wouldn’t be the ideal weapon for cross-country adventures, but it should be in its element in heavy city traffic, where its tiny exterior dimensions let it slip through gaps that would stump larger vehicles. The seller’s use of the word “excellent” when describing this classic suggests there are no mechanical shortcomings, and that the Viewt is ready for action.

Many iconic phrases serve us well in our daily lives. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. That seemed like a good idea at the time. A face that only a mother could love. Some readers will believe that any or all of these are relevant to the 2000 Misuoka Viewt. I’ve used the word “quirky” to describe it, which I think is fair. The seller’s listing has attracted 118 views today, and 46 people have added the Viewt to their Watch List. Its greatest strength may be its affordability, which might be drawing attention. If you find life too serious and stressful and want lighthearted relief, this Mitsuoka might provide automotive stress reduction. Are any readers brave enough to park it in their driveway?

Seems like these Japanese nods to famous vehicles are cartoon-ish in their design, and not something I find appealing. Hard to argue with the price though, and cared for I’m sure it would last a very long time.
