Rare Fish: 1969 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S

In 1969, Plymouth offered both a Formula S and a ‘Cuda version of the Barracuda. The ‘Cuda was classified as a performance vehicle, while the Formula S was better trimmed. The Formula S came standard with a 340, and a 383 was optional, while the ‘Cuda’s engine options were the A56 340, A57 383, and the A13 440. Apparently, this example is rare, as not many 383 4-speed Formula Ss were made in 1969. This beauty is now available here on eBay Motors, in Knoxville, Tennessee. The asking price is $45,000, and only one day remains. Thanks once again to an anonymous tipster for this fish story!

The seller says the engine is a 383 stroker. It doesn’t mention whether it is original, but an earlier sale of the same vehicle noted a numbers-matching 383. The eBay ad does not specify several apparent engine enhancements. The owner says the car starts, runs, and drives very well.

The interior is classic late-sixties Plymouth muscle. The very clean interior includes black vinyl buckets in excellent condition, a Hurst Shifter, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a column-mounted Mopar 9 grand tachometer. It also has ammeter, temp, fuel, and oil-pressure gauges. The only thing not working is the radio, but if the car sounds like the seller claims, who needs a radio? It has brand-new wheels and tires: US slotted wheels and M&H Racemaster tires in a staggered configuration.

This particular car is a great example of the Formula S. I am not sure about the wheels and stance, though it does look mean. I wonder whether it would be better to bring it back to its original stance or leave it as is and just drive it. I don’t think it is a showroom queen but something that should be used regularly. According to collectorcarmarket.com, a #1-condition 1969 Barracuda Formula S fastback is $53,000. Add 15% for the 383 instead of the 340 and 10% for the 4-speed, and you are looking at just over $66,000. The question you must ask is whether $45,000 is the right price. If it is, hurry to the website, because it will be gone before you know it.
