Need a Donor or Project? Stash of Rusty Gold

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you’re in the vicinity of Santa Rosa, California, you may want to get hold of this seller. He (Dan) has at least 17 cars and trucks sitting out in a field and rusting away. We’re told he’s “testing the market,” so we have no idea what he may be looking to get out of this stash of rusty gold. They may all be parts cars at best. Check out the “collection” here on craigslist.

There are zero details about any of these vehicles, and Dan just asks, “Any interest?” Most of these vehicles seem to be from the 1960s and 1970s and could have been sitting on this Santa Rosa property for years or even decades. We’re told to call or text him, but no number is provided, so you’ll have to go through craigslist’s email system, which is not known for its reliability.

As best as I can tell, the seller’s inventory comprises the following:

1st Gen Chevrolet Corvair (1960-64), 1970 Mercedes SEL

VW Transporter, 1957 Chevrolet

1966 Ford Mustang, 1970s Porsche

4th Gen Ford Thunderbird (1964-66)

1961 Chevrolet, 1960s Jaguar

2 Rolls-Royce/Bentley, 3 U-Haul trucks (2 Fords, 1 Chevy)

1 Ford tow truck, 2 1970s Chevy pickups

Maybe something in this group is restorable, but searching for parts is more likely. We’re guessing you’ll have to take a whole car or nothing at all. Maybe he’ll sell you the entire lot. Perhaps even the property they’re sitting on. What’s your take?

The Tbird is a ’66; no chrome mustache on the bumper. Not sure why, but I’d almost go for one of the U-Haul trucks for a cheapo camper conversion…

Why is there no mention of the 911 Targa? Am I missing an AI joke or something?

yea, it’s barely mentioned as 1970’s Porsche same line as the 1966 Mustang. And yep, that’s the one I would want, lol

That area is generally dry, but can get significant rain over short periods of time during the winter, it’s referred to as Pineapple Express. That happened earlier this winter, but those conditions are rare, happening every few years. Since that weather pattern shifted, in mid-January there has been no significant rain.

The Jaguar is either a Series 1.5 or 2 Etype coupe. I’m leaning towards 1.5 due to the small size of the mouth. 1.5 was with the covered headlights swapped for the sealed beams and the rear taillights still above the bumper as in the Series 1. The Series 2 had a larger mouth and the headlight buckets and chrome were slightly larger as well, and the taillights were changed to be larger and under the rear bumper. Same 4.2 engine, but with SUs. I think only the 67 had the triple SUs. By 70, I think, the SUs were replaced with 2 Strombergs (but it could have been in 69).

I’m not sure, but there is a car next to the U-Haul truck under cover and the front looks like it could be an early Jaguar XJS.

The property itself must be going on the market sometime in the near future and “everything must go!” (somewhere else).

If one has an insurance company then buy the 70 Wrecker and paint it up with a State Farm or whatever brand of insurance they have on their shingle. It could be a nice advertisement to play up with for business. It’s too modern to make the Cars movie animated “Mater”.

I see water standing in the field and am sure we have tin worms underneath many of the forgotten relics. I am sure some may have been “burning diesel, burning dinosaur bones” ( Johnny Cash “Rusty Cage” line.. :-)

One good thing about these cars is they are getting great MPG over the years…. LOL!

I hope a couple make it back to the pavement again.

That Ford tow truck might make a nice project. It looks like a twin-boom Holmes deck on the back. It might have a 300 ci six in the front and be a good truck.

      Correct Andrew.
It is a Holmes twin boom.I have one. Twin boom is from the 40s. This body is later but better than my no body.

They may not be as bad as the look in the pictures. As Steve R mentioned, we are pretty dry here for the most part with all of our rain falling between November and the beginning of March usually. Early Spring here this year, thus the grass is getting high and probably quite a bit higher than these pics.

Probably would do a world of good to get the weed wacker and pressure washer out and see what you actually have, but as someone mentioned, this may be a situation where they are looking to sell the property and need to clear them out. Not sure the years on the trucks, but they could be pre-smog, which in my book makes them more interesting, but agreed that the circumstances around these are going to limit their value quite a bit.

Going out there might get me one step closer to my property looking like this….. Dangerous. I have my own 69 chevy sitting here waiting to be revived. ….

The 2 Ford U-Haul trucks are 1978 or 1979 models based on the grilles.

Those are probably the last U-Hauls in California that aren’t spoken for.

HA! I read, UHaul is having a banner year(s), and ANY rental vehicle is hard to find. California loses over 200,000 residents a year( 219,000 last year alone) and guess where they are coming? I can only imagine those trucks are plumb full of stuff too.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but a 58 would have had dual headlights and the fenders look more like a single headlight.
