Collection of Cars in California

Most collectors lean toward one brand of car, style or vintage. In this case, the seller offers a little bit of several things. Two are AMC products, two are kits car and one is a VW Beetle, the nicest one in the bunch. But they’re all from the 1970s. If any of them strike your fancy, they can be found in Roseville, California and are available here on Facebook Marketplace from $1,800 to $5,500 depending on your selection. The seller is clearing out space to complete some other projects. Besides the cars the seller lists, there is another blue kit car not mentioned but pictured that looks as though something may have been dropped on it. Thanks, Scuderia, for alerting us to this potpourri of cars.

1970 AMC Javelin

This one is said to be a runner and the registration is current, but it will need restoring. This Javelin started out as medium blue car with a white interior but an accident or something else has brought a white passenger side fender with a stripe on it. It looks as though a V8 is under the hood, but that could be anything from a 290 to 390. $5,550 takes it.

1971 AMC Gremlin

The Gremlin would be AMC’s answer to the ‘70s onslaught of imported subcompacts. It wasn’t in quite the same vein with its six-cylinder (and later V8) engines. It would be a Hornet with a shorter wheelbase and rear deck to create a smaller package. We’re told this is the 2-seat version available for 1970-72 and is not in running condition, although said to be complete for $3,000.

1972 Volkswagen Beetle

The “Big” is one of the most prolific and longest-running production cars in the world. This one looks to be in really nice condition, although something may be a little funky with the “hood” over the engine. Of anything in the seller’s harem, this is the only one that looks like you could get in and drive it home. It’s also currently registered with the DMV and $5,500 is the magic number here.

1978 Bradley GT

Bradley Automotive began selling the Bradley GT in the 1970s and was a kit car built on the chassis of the original VW Beetle. About 6,000 were actually made and sold and the most distinguishing feature is their gullwing-style doors. This one is said to be complete but there is no indication what it would take to get it running again. But for $1,800, it’s yours!

1978 Sterling

Another VW-based kit car, these were also available in the 1970s, but less well-known as the Bradley. This one looks to be perched on a stand with the suspension bunched up. The seller says it needs to be built, which implies to me that it has no drivetrain. It’s bound to have a fiberglass body like the Bradley. If you just have to have it, give the man $2,500 and bring your trailer.

Interesting stuff. The engine lid on the blue Bug has an accessory bracket bolted to the hinges to get more cooling air to it. Probably a modified engine or just to survive California traffic. Sterling an interesting car.. At 5’6″ the one I sat in once was a chore to get out of.

If I had a Frasier, I might Amaze her. If I had a Kyser, I might surprise her: But if I only had a Tucker…

My dad actually ordered a 1948 Tucker, like a few thousand other disappointed people did. He ended up buying a blue 1949 Kaiser 4 door sedan instead. My older brother told me that car broke down on the first drive home from the dealership! I want to thank the ‘Big Three’ automakers for crushing so many peoples dreams back then.

My dad told me he bought a Kaiser (or was it a Fraser) after the war as it was the only new car available, and it was the biggest POS he ever owned!

Russ, you made me laugh with — the “Big” —.
I would love to save both those AMC’s but alas, no funds.

I live in the area – the seller has been trying to sell these for a while… Haven’t checked anything out in person b/c I don’t have time for a project right now…but…figure prices should be negotiable since the cars have been for sale for at least a couple of months or so?

Is the Sterling kitcar still available? I’m interested and would need to know how I could get in touch with the seller. I know that I’m a month late but if it is still available, I would be interested.

I have the 1976 Sterling built for George Evans, President of American Handcrafted Automobiles. It was built by California Component Cars of San Lorenzo California. It is in very much the same shape it was when featured in Kit Car magazine as “Stunning Sterling” April issue of 1990. It has the same Scirocco engine as featured with all of its chrome. It has 21963 miles on it. I have too many other cars to finish and no room for it. Let me know and I will send pictures….
