Hoard of Mopars and More in Texas!

Once upon a time, a Texas named John Haynie took a liking to Chrysler products and started amassing a collection of them. By the time he passed away at the age of 52, his arsenal had grown to more than 400 vehicles. While most are Chryslers, Dodges, Plymouths, and DeSoto’s, a handful of Fords and Chevies have crept in there. The collection will be auctioned off online by his estate, but the cars and trucks all look to be in Midland, Texas on an expansive piece of property. Available here on Freedom Car Auctions, everything will be sold without a reserve on October 13-14, 2021.

As the story goes, it was Haynie’s “passion and purpose” to collect all things Mopar. His entourage goes beyond cars and trucks but also to toys, literature, and memorabilia, The oldest vehicles date back to the 1930s while more recent additions seem to stop somewhere in the 1970s. Given the prairies of Texas have an arid climate many of these hundreds of vehicles are solid and structurally sound, although some are wrecked and rusted hulks, too. Most seem to be located outdoors, but a few are inside as well.

Some of what old John accumulated include:

  • 13 Chrysler 300s
  • 24 Chrysler Imperials
  • 36 pickups and trucks and 5 vans
  • 14 station wagons
  • 6 convertibles and 6 police cars

Here are some cars that struck me as potentially interesting compared to others:

1966 Chrysler Imperial Convertible

1964 Plymouth Valiant Barracuda Coupe (Green Go or Sassy Grass in color)

1959 Dodge Coronet Coupe Highway Patrol

1937 Dodge D5 Phaeton Convertible

1961 Dodge Lancer Wagon (Chopped & Customized

1962 Chrysler 300 H Coupe

1962 Ford Capri Coupe

1960 Dodge D300 Service Bus

1962 Plymouth Sport Fury Coupe

1969 Plymouth Sport Fury Coupe

1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Convertible (Never Titled)

1950 Dodge Coronet Special Sedan Limousine

If you’re anywhere near Midland, Texas, you owe it to yourself to try to find where these cars are and see if they will let you peek at what’s there. A goldmine of fun for any Mopar enthusiast!

I would have sworn there was no way to make a ’62 Valiant even uglier, but someone did it!!

That Valiant looks better than one of my old girlfriends…

Agree, but give credit where due as it looks “right”. Imagine it as a gasser with big wheelie bars!

I saw a panel Valiant once. The owner said they were made for Bell Telephone and only a few hundred were built and were two doors. It certainly looked factory, no welded up doors or anything like that if I remember rightIt was at the Mopar Nats in Columbus and it actually looked pretty good.

Panel & pickup 2 dr style valiants were made & available in Australia and Brazil from around 62 thru the early 70s. Similar to ford falcon type pickups & panel trucks, they were widely used as SUV’s & small business delivery, as well as for emergency 1st responders.

The modified body is a Dodge Lancer, the a-body dodge didnt become dart until 63 (cause the b body was a dart). But theres a Valiant wagon also that’s similar.

The auction has commentator Steve Magnante doing videos of most of the cars which is interesting. Seems like most of these cars are base model variants. Yawn. My fav is the Fiat used as target practice:

The lime green Barracuda looks interesting, but isn’t it a ’65, not a ’64?

      I see 14″ wheels, which makes it a `65. I own one; I know.

It’s a 1964 – the dash is the tell tale – not the option wheels/hub caps . And the emblem if you know it’s a one year also -1964.

That’s a Consul Capri rather than a Capri; it was a variant of the Consul saloon as opposed to the later Capri which was a standalone (Mercury car in the US, wasn’t it?).

That Consul Capri is quite a rare item on this side of the pond. The dad of a guy I knew in high school in the early 1970s had one. I might have spotted another one (and an Austin A90) near Hinsdale, Montana in 2015. Those are the only two I can recall seeing here in the States.

I read the guys obituary, died in 2020, was never married and hence, no kids. It’s sad, because, since there was no plan, most just left outside to rot, and it’s playing out all across this country, with many of these “collections” featured here. As with most, there are always some collectible cars, but mostly scrap and just closes the chapter on “John Haynie and his Mopars”,,,

I went to the auction page. There are numerous cars, pickups and vans, some are in nice condition. There’s even a Toyota pickup if that’s your thing. Now Midland is in far west Texas. Not much of a burg but there is an airport. It’s over 500 miles from Houston. I have a sil in a retirement home in Ft. Stockton, which is nearby, so it might be in my near future to make a trip over there to visit and check this place out.
    God bless America

I was eyeballing the 65 Fury 2-door post; looks in okay fixable shape, and that’s a rare body style. The turquoise and white 57 Belvedere 4-door hardtop caught my eye too.

So hear is a chance for some people to buy a old car and fix up,but you always hear people complaining about some thing. They expect some thing free. These are Chrysler products—–are don,t have outrageous prices. Sure beats some Charger is terrible shape. People asking rediculeous prices in the thousands-WITHOUT RUNNING GEARS–INTEREOR–WINDOWS. $5-$6,OOO PUT INTO ONE OF THESE CARS .WOULD MAKE A DEPENDABLE CAR. Sure beats paying $20,000 for the junk they sale as new cars.

The shorty wagon is ` 62 Lancer 770 based on the Vin#.
Only the grille is a `61.
The doors are off of a Valiant, as Lancer doors had a downward swoop in the door sculpting.
The dash is `62 Lancer as well.
I notified the auctioneer but they have not updated it.

OMG, so many things there that I want but I have 9 cars and I think that is my limit. That dodge limo is very interesting. They were used like that in Turkey and Israel as shared taxis
